Die Stadt Cottbus liegt so weit im Osten Brandenburgs, dass sie schon fast in Polen liegt. Obwohl dies weit weg von der nächsten Küste ist, findet sich im Stadtwappen ein roter Hummer, dessen Herkunft niemand genau begründen kann. Unter Fußballfreunden deutschlandweit bekannt ist das Stadion der Freundschaft, hauptsächlich wegen seines hübschen Namens, weniger wegen des ruhmreichen Fußballs des Klubs Energie Cottbus.
Die Technische Universität Cottbus wurde 1991 gegründet und ist damit die jüngste TU Deutschlands. Im Moment studieren dort etwa 7.000 Menschen.
